Dickson Ndiema, the man accused of attacking and killing Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, has died in hospital from injuries sustained during the incident.
Ndiema, the former partner of the 33-year-old Olympian, reportedly set her on fire using petrol during an attack in Kenya. The assault left Cheptegei with severe burns, leading to her death last Thursday.
Ndiema, who suffered 30% burns during the attack, was admitted to the intensive care unit at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, the same hospital where Cheptegei was treated. Despite efforts to save his life, he passed away on Monday night.
A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed Ndiema’s death on Tuesday, bringing a tragic end to the horrific incident that has shocked both Kenya and Uganda.
