The English Premier League has banned clubs from carrying gambling sponsorship on the front of their match-day shirts.

According to Sky News, the league management said in a statement on Thursday that this followed an extensive consultation involving the league, its clubs, and the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport.

The move, the report added, forms part of the government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation, and gambling sponsorship will be axed at the end of the 2025–26 season.

“Until then, existing and new shirt-front gambling sponsorship contracts will be allowed.
“Clubs will continue to be able to feature gambling brands in other areas, including shirt sleeves and LED advertising”, the statement instructed.

Reports suggest that English football administrators are working with other sports to develop a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship.

Many sports analysts viewed this as a giant move to bring sanity into the gambling industry, which relies heavily on the world’s most expensive league for its advertisement.

Checks showed there are eight English Premier League clubs with gambling companies as shirt sponsors, with an estimated value of £60 million each year.
