Just days after Cristiano Ronaldo boldly declared himself the greatest and most complete footballer of all time, Porto midfielder Alan Varela has named Lionel Messi as the best player in the world.
Speaking during Porto’s FIFA Club World Cup 2025 trophy tour, the Argentine star expressed his excitement about potentially facing Messi later this year. Varela emphasized that sharing the pitch with his nation’s legendary captain would be a special moment.
“The truth is, Messi is the best player in the world,” Varela told The Business Standard. “Obviously, it’s very special to face him. I just hope he’s not too brilliant in that game. We’ll do everything we can to make sure Porto comes out on top.”
His statement comes in contrast to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent claim that he is the greatest footballer ever. The Portuguese superstar insisted that he has not seen anyone better than himself, not even Messi—who is widely regarded as the GOAT by many fans and analysts.
Inter Miami, Messi’s current club, will be competing in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 after winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield last season and being named the host club for the tournament.
As anticipation builds for the FIFA Club World Cup, football fans worldwide eagerly await a potential showdown between Messi and Varela, while the debate over the sport’s greatest player continues to rage on.
