Two key Manchester United defenders, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, could be ruled out with injuries for the remainder of the season.
In a statement on Friday night, the club announced that Martinez’s first season at Theatre of Dreams has suddenly come to an end.
The club also said that France international Raphael Varane, who was hauled off at halftime during their 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday night, will spend weeks on the sidelines.
The former Real Madrid defender and Martinez, who joined from Ajax this summer, have formed a key partnership at the heart of United’s defense this term.
The Athletic reports that Varane may join Martinez in missing the conclusion of the 2022–23 campaign, although Manchester United is hoping he returns in a few weeks.
United’s statement about both center-backs said, in part, “Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.
“Raphael Varane was also substituted with an injury at halftime in the same game and is expected to be out for a few weeks.”
