Former Premier League attacker, Ian Wright has admitted that he has been surprised by the Manchester United defender, Lisandro Martinez.
Wright said that the Argentine’s defensive quality has not been seen at Old Trafford in recent years.
The Argentina international made a big money move from Ajax over the summer and was greeted by criticisms over his height as a central defender.
Martinez produced another outstanding performance in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.
Marcus Rashford’s 100th Manchester United goal put the home side in front against the Hammers.
Wright hailed the former Ajax defender who partnered the returning Harry Maguire in the heart of United’s defence following Raphael Varane’s injury.
“He’s got defensive quality that I haven’t seen at Manchester United for a while,” Wright said according to Premier League productions.
“He’s exactly what they’ve needed. Someone that doesn’t mess about, there’s no thrills with him, it’s just bang, good challenges.
“He’s been a really, really good signing. I didn’t think he was going to be as good as he’s been.”
