Jermaine Pennant, a former Liverpool winger, criticized Cristiano Ronaldo for not apologizing to his coach, teammates, or the fans for his "arrogant" behavior during their 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

The club immediately issued a statement announcing that sanctions would be applied.

Ronaldo allegedly refused to enter the game as a substitute, and then, just before the game's conclusion, he left the stadium by walking down the Old Trafford tunnel.

According to a statement released by Manchester United on Thursday, the Portuguese player would receive a suspension that included his exclusion from this weekend's game against Chelsea.

The former Real Madrid and Juventus star himself then released a statement in the hours after that, saying'sometimes the heat of the moment gets the better of us’.

Pennant told talkSPORT: "Pathetic." Absolutely pathetic. At the end of the day, be a man and own up to your mistakes. Hands up, I messed up here and I sincerely apologise to my teammates, my manager, the club and the fans.

“That statement there, he’s not taking accountability there and there’s no apology.”

Pennant noted that the Portuguese’s statement failed below standard, adding that he should have used the statement to put himself back into the team instead of saying how he had done this or done that.

“It’s a load of nonsense." "It's just PR for him and not what he should be doing,” he said.
