After losing to the Netherlands in their final game, Qatar firmly established their status as the worst-ever World Cup host nation.

Following the 2-0 loss to Ecuador and the 3-1 defeat to Senegal, the Middle Eastern team had already made history by becoming the first host nation to lose their opening match and the first to be eliminated after just two games.

On Monday afternoon against Holland, they had a chance to regain some of their pride, but in the end, Louis van Gaal's team cruised to a 2-0 victory to secure their position at the top of Group A.

Cody Gakpo, a transfer target for Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United, scored the game's first goal for the Netherlands after 26 minutes, giving them three goals in as many games.

Just a few minutes after the half, Frenkie de Jong doubled their advantage by tapping Memphis Depay's shot into the net after Meshaal Barsham had initially made a good save.

The result means that Qatar has become the first host nation to lose three games at its own World Cup.

They are only the second host team to fail to make it beyond the group stage after South Africa in 2010, though at least Bafana Bafana managed to beat France and were only knocked out on goal difference by Mexico.

Qatar have also scored just one goal, the fewest of any host nation, and have conceded seven, the most of any host in the group stage, beating South Africa’s record of five.

Given their lack of football pedigree, not much was expected of Qatar going into the tournament, though their 2019 Asian Cup triumph and home advantage did lead some to believe they could make it out of the group stage.

But in the end, the results and performances have been shockingly poor, with Joe Cole telling ITV: "Qatar’s defense has been horrendous."
‘[The Frenkie de Jong goal] sums up their whole performance. Lacking urgency, lacking passion.’
Former Dutch international Nigel de Jong added: ‘The urgency wasn’t there and it sums up not only this game but the whole tournament for how Qatar has performed at this World Cup.
‘It’s a pity, especially as a host nation.’
