In a display of sheer dominance, the Super Falcons of Nigeria asserted their prowess in the first leg of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, clinching a commanding 5-0 victory against Cape Verde on Thursday.

From the initial kickoff at the MKO Abiola Stadium, the Super Falcons seized control of the match, setting the tempo and creating numerous scoring opportunities. The crowd erupted in joy as Uchenna Kanu broke the deadlock in the seventh minute, marking the beginning of an impressive performance by the home team.

Maintaining their relentless attack, the Super Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute, courtesy of Gift Monday, who capitalized on a goalmouth scramble. Before the halftime whistle, Kanu secured her brace with a brilliant finish, propelling the home team to a commanding 3-0 advantage.

As the second half unfolded, Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu strategically introduced Esther Onyenezide and Esther Okoronkwo for Peace Efih and Gift Monday, respectively. The substitutions proved effective as Okoronkwo made an immediate impact, scoring a sublime goal from an Esther Akudo Ogbonna cross in the 66th minute.

Continuing her scoring spree, Okoronkwo added another goal in the 77th minute, sealing an emphatic 5-0 victory for the Super Falcons. With this stellar performance, the team has positioned themselves favorably for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco.

Looking ahead, the Super Falcons will journey to Praia for the second leg on December 5, with the aim of completing a double triumph and securing their place in the continental tournament in grand style. The resounding victory in the first leg has undoubtedly boosted their confidence and heightened expectations for a successful campaign in the upcoming competition.
