According to the Athletic, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has declined an opportunity to join Erik ten Hag's new coaching staff at the club.

Instead, the Englishman has decided to stay with the demoted Derby County.

After weeks of speculation, Erik Ten Hag was named the new Manchester United manager yesterday.

He is set to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season, taking over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The rest of his coaching team is currently being assembled by the Red Devils' hierarchy.

The remaining members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team are expected to quit the club, with Ten Hag hoping to start from scratch at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Athletic reports that Rooney, United's former captain and all-time record goal scorer, was on the list of the candidates for a position on Ten Hag’s team.

He was "informally proposed as a possibility for the coaching staff," but the former England striker turned the offer down, making it clear to United that he would only leave Derby for a No. 1 position.

Rooney now looks set to remain in charge of the Rams for next season, although he has been linked with the vacant Burnley job.

Ten Hag’s current assistants at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, are in line to join the Dutchman at Old Trafford.
