Former Chelsea star Frank Leboeuf has slammed Jhon Duran’s decision to leave Aston Villa for Saudi Pro League giants Al-Nassr, calling it a major misstep for the young striker’s career.
Leboeuf believes Duran, who was just starting to make a name for himself in the Premier League, should have stayed in England instead of following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Wenger Also ‘Surprised’ by Duran’s Move
Legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also expressed shock over the 21-year-old’s decision to swap top-tier European football for a lucrative deal in Saudi Arabia.
Duran had been in impressive form for Aston Villa, netting 12 goals in the first half of the season despite playing as a backup to Ollie Watkins. Frustrated by limited game time under Unai Emery, the Colombian forward opted for a high-profile switch to Al-Nassr, where he now plays alongside superstars like Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, and Marcelo Brozovic.
Leboeuf: "Saudi League is Not for Young Players"
Speaking to ESPN, Leboeuf insisted that such moves are meant for aging stars, not young talents like Duran.
“At 20, no way—never! Why would you leave top-level football? That’s insane. You have to love football in your blood," Leboeuf said.
“With all due respect to the Saudi League, it’s for almost retired players. I did that in Qatar, we saw the same in MLS and Japan. It’s not for a 20-year-old.”
Leboeuf also pointed out the struggles of players who have attempted to return to European football after moving to Saudi Arabia.
“Some will argue he can come back, like Fofana, who went from Lens to Saudi Arabia and back to Rennes. But it doesn’t work—it’s too hard. You drop your level.”
Cristiano Ronaldo Nears New Al-Nassr Contract
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly in talks to extend his contract with Al-Nassr beyond its current expiration in June. The Portuguese superstar has been a key figure in the Saudi Pro League’s rise in global prominence.
Duran’s move continues to spark debate, but is he risking his long-term career for short-term financial gain? Only time will tell.
