When the two teams square off in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Group H final match on Friday evening, former Ghanaian international Ibrahim Ayew has insisted that the Black Stars will be seeking revenge against Uruguay and striker Luis Suarez.
According to Ayew, Suarez is despised in Ghana and throughout Africa because of what he did to the Black Stars during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Remember how, with a handball on the goal line in the dying seconds of the 2010 World Cup, Suarez prevented Ghana from moving on to the semifinals?
Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty after the former Liverpool and Barcelona player was given a red card, which led to the West African giants losing the shootout.
Ghana will be looking to exact revenge on Uruguay for their infamous loss to La Celeste in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.
Ayew, who currently plays for Bruno's Magpies, said he wants Ghana to exact revenge on Uruguay and Suarez in an interview with The Athletic 12 years after the incident.
“I thought we had won. I was a substitute, warming up behind that goal, and I ran onto the pitch to celebrate because I was sure the ball had crossed the line. "I thought we had done it—the first African team ever to reach the semifinals of the World Cup,” Ayew said.
He continued: “The whole of Ghana hates him [Luis Suarez], and the whole of Africa hates him." Oh, yes, we hate him. "And we want revenge.”
