Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez, also known as Emeka Akumefule, credits Wizkid's track 'Essence' for propelling Afrobeats onto the global stage.
In a recent interview with American outlet KTLA, Blaqbonez emphasized the significant impact of 'Essence,' featuring Tems, which debuted in 2020.
He highlighted how the track's success elevated Afrobeats' popularity worldwide, signaling to the music industry that Afrobeats is a genre to watch closely. Blaqbonez noted the surge in attention and opportunities for Afrobeats artists, attributing it to the groundbreaking success of 'Essence.'
It's worth noting that Wizkid's team has described 'Essence' as an R&B song, despite its association with Afrobeats. Wizkid himself has expressed reluctance to be confined to a single genre.
