Reports have emerged of an Israeli Air Force airstrike targeting a building adjacent to Iran’s embassy in Damascus on Monday, resulting in casualties, including a senior Iranian commander.
The strike, which occurred in the Mezzeh municipality of Damascus, raised tensions in the already volatile Middle East region.
According to footage, the strike hit a building close to the Iranian embassy, causing significant damage. Reports from Reuters described a building within the embassy compound as "flattened," indicating a substantial escalation in the conflict dynamics between Israel and Iran and their respective allies. Iranian sources, however, stated that the targeted structure was Iran’s consulate and ambassador’s residence.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that at least six individuals lost their lives in the airstrike, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior official in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force. Zahedi was responsible for coordinating IRGC operations in Syria and Lebanon, as well as maintaining ties with Hezbollah, making him a key figure in Iran’s regional influence.
This strike marks the most significant killing of an IRGC leader since the US assassination of Quds Force chief Qasem Soleimani in January 2020. Zahedi's deputy was also reported to have been killed in the attack.
Iran swiftly condemned the airstrike, with its ambassador in Syria warning of a harsh response. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held Israel accountable for the consequences of the attack, according to Iran’s state media.
Footage from the scene depicted the destruction caused by the strike, with an Iranian flag still visible amidst the rubble. Syria's state-run broadcaster, SANA, claimed that air defense systems engaged the Israeli attack, intercepting some of the missiles.
The airstrike near Iran’s embassy in Damascus has heightened tensions in an already volatile region, underscoring the ongoing conflict dynamics between Israel and Iran and the potential for further escalation in the Middle East.
