Philip Shaibu, the recently impeached Deputy Governor of Edo State, has expressed his opinion regarding the linguistic capabilities of Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate for the forthcoming election.
Addressing attendees at the Edo Central PDP leaders and stakeholders meeting in Irrua, the administrative headquarters of Esan Central Local Government Area, Shaibu voiced concerns over Ighodalo's need for an interpreter if he were to win the election. Shaibu emphasized the importance of fluency in the Edo dialect for anyone aspiring to govern the state.
Shaibu affirmed his support for a candidate who not only comprehends the aspirations of the people but also possesses the ability to communicate effectively in the local dialect. He argued that a candidate relying on an interpreter lacks the essential connection to the Edo people, thus disqualifying them as a genuine "homeboy."
In his address, Shaibu highlighted the significance of electing a leader deeply rooted in the cultural and linguistic fabric of Edo State. He asserted that individuals born outside the state, such as those from Lagos, cannot be considered true "homeboys."
The criticism directed at Ighodalo stems from a previous incident where he employed an interpreter to convey his intentions to his kinsmen at a ward in Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area of the state.
