The seven-member panel established by Edo State's Chief Judge, Daniel Okungbowa, began hearings on Monday to investigate the impeachment petition against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.

The panel, constituted on March 22, 2024, consists of Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd) as chairperson, along with other distinguished members.

Representatives for both Shaibu and the Edo State House of Assembly were present at the hearing. Shaibu's counsel, Professor Oladoyin Awoyale, highlighted a Federal High Court order requesting the panel to show cause regarding an interlocutory injunction. The court has adjourned the case until April 8, 2024. Awoyale emphasized the importance of respecting court orders and requested that proceedings be postponed until the court's decision.

However, the House of Assembly's counsel, Joe Ohiafi, argued that the panel should proceed with its duties as mandated by the constitution. He cited Section 188 subsection 10, which states that no court can invalidate the panel's proceedings.

The panel adjourned to deliver a ruling on Awoyale's submission. The hearings are being held at the Judges Conference Room, New High Court Complex, Benin City.

The State House of Assembly initiated the impeachment process against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu on March 6, 2024, alleging misconduct and perjury.
