The High Court in Ado Ekiti Division in Ekiti State has pronounced a 28-year-old man, Ayodeji Alomoge, guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging.

The harrowing case stemmed from Alomoge's fatal altercation with a man rumored to be involved with his wife.

Alomoge stood trial on a charge of murder, accused of perpetrating the heinous act on June 21, 2022, in Ikere Ekiti. According to the charge, he unlawfully took the life of one Ogunleye Ayomide, contravening Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The tragedy unfolded when the father of the deceased, Ige Ogunleye, received a distressing call informing him of his son's brutal assault by Alomoge and his accomplices. Rushing to the scene, he found Ayomide grievously injured, surrounded by a pool of his own blood. Alomoge, apprehended by bystanders, confessed to attacking Ayomide due to suspicions of an extramarital affair with his wife.

In court, the prosecutor, Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, presented compelling evidence, including witness testimonies, the defendant's statements, images of the deceased, and a medical report detailing the cause of death. In his defense, Alomoge's lawyer, Adeyinka Opaleke, implored the court for leniency, though no witnesses were called to testify on his behalf.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Jubril Aladejana scrutinized the circumstances surrounding the crime, emphasizing that jealousy and rivalry over romantic relationships cannot justify such extreme violence. Concluding that Alomoge was culpable of the murder charge, Justice Aladejana decreed the ultimate penalty: death by hanging.

The solemn pronouncement echoed a resolute stance against acts of vengeance and brutality, underscoring the sanctity of human life and the imperative of upholding the rule of law. As Alomoge faces the consequences of his actions, the verdict serves as a somber reminder of the irreversible consequences of unchecked violence and the paramount importance of seeking justice within a fair and impartial legal system.
