At least 16 people lost their lives in a horrific accident on Tuesday afternoon after a white Mazda bus burst into flames along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, Ogun State.
Three other passengers sustained severe injuries in the tragic incident that occurred around 1:00 PM near Buhari Estate.
Bus Explosion Claims Lives
According to Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicle—registered as KJA 949 YJ—was carrying 21 passengers when the fire broke out, leading to a devastating explosion. Tragically, the victims were burnt beyond recognition, making it impossible to determine their genders.
Cause of the Fire: A Deadly Gas Cylinder Explosion
Initial investigations suggest that the fire originated inside the bus, which was also carrying a filled gas cylinder. The explosion worsened the fire, leaving 16 dead, three critically injured, and two miraculously unhurt.
Rescue Efforts and FRSC’s Safety Warning
Emergency responders from RS2.2 Abeokuta Sector Command quickly arrived at the scene to rescue the injured, who were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased remain at the site awaiting evacuation.
In response to the tragedy, FRSC Sector Commander Akinwumi Fasakin extended condolences to the families of the victims and issued a strong warning against transporting flammable items in passenger vehicles. He emphasized that highly combustible materials should only be carried in designated vehicles operated by trained professionals.

Fasakin attributed the accident to driver negligence, urging motorists to prioritize safety and strictly adhere to road regulations. He called on passengers to be vigilant and avoid boarding vehicles that pose safety risks.
