Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have decided to retract the impeachment notice previously issued to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The official announcement came during their session in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The lawmakers convened specifically to address the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against Fubara, signaling a pivotal moment in the ongoing political dynamics within the state. The decision to rescind the impeachment notice follows a mediated truce brokered during a meeting between the warring parties, including Governor Fubara, and President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Villa in Abuja on Monday.

During the assembly session, the lawmakers made their decision public through a notice read on the house floor. Their rationale for withdrawing the impeachment notice was explicitly linked to a sense of respect for President Bola Tinubu, underlining the significance of the mediation efforts in resolving the conflict.

The dispute between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, had deeply divided the House. In response to the political turmoil, 27 lawmakers defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, further complicating the legislative landscape.

Throughout the course of the feud, various dramatic incidents unfolded, including the emergence of parallel sittings, the uncovering of an impeachment plot against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a wave of resignations within Fubara's cabinet, particularly among pro-Wike commissioners.

As the withdrawal of the impeachment notice marks a significant step towards political reconciliation, the Rivers State House of Assembly's decision reflects the complexities and challenges inherent in navigating the intricate political terrain of the state. The aftermath of these developments is likely to shape the future trajectory of political relationships and dynamics in Rivers State.
