The Osun State Police Command has initiated a manhunt to capture those responsible for the violent clashes that erupted across the state, resulting in multiple deaths and widespread destruction.
Political Unrest Sparks Violence
The unrest began on Monday when sacked local government chairmen and councillors affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) attempted to reclaim their offices. Their move followed a Court of Appeal ruling that overturned their dismissal.
However, their actions met strong resistance from supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leading to escalating tensions. As rival factions clashed at various council secretariats, violence erupted, claiming lives and causing significant property damage.
Casualties and Destruction
Reports confirm that six people lost their lives in the chaos, while several others sustained injuries. Among the deceased was Remi Abass, a prominent APC chieftain, who was allegedly killed at the entrance of the Irewole Local Government Secretariat in Ikire. He was laid to rest on Tuesday following Islamic burial rites.
Police Response and Investigation
In a statement on Tuesday, the Osun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, expressed deep sympathy for those who lost their loved ones and property. She assured the public that Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, has pledged a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The crisis left six people dead and several others hospitalized. We are deeply saddened by these events and have held multiple meetings with various groups and the Commissioner of Police to prevent further escalation,” Opalola stated.
She also urged residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement officers to carry out their duties in restoring peace.
“Anyone inciting violence must desist immediately. Osun is known for peace, and we will not allow anyone to disrupt it. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has deployed additional mobile police personnel to Osun, and they arrived last night to reinforce security.”
OSSIEC Confirms Local Government Elections Will Proceed
Amid the turmoil, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has insisted that the local government elections will hold as scheduled on February 22, 2025.
Addressing concerns over security, OSSIEC’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, dismissed rumors that the commission’s premises had been sealed by military personnel.
“The public should disregard the fake news suggesting that OSSIEC’s offices have been sealed by the Nigerian Army. Security agencies, including the police, DSS, NSCDC, NDLEA, Amotekun Corps, and vigilante groups, are actively safeguarding our premises and election materials,” the statement read.
The commission assured the electorate that preparations for the election remain on track and security measures are in place to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Call for Peace
As Osun State faces political turbulence, the police and relevant authorities are working tirelessly to restore stability. Residents are encouraged to remain law-abiding and allow security forces to handle the situation. The state government, law enforcement, and electoral commission remain committed to maintaining peace and upholding democratic processes.
