Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has voiced strong criticism regarding the recent death sentence handed to two individuals accused of stealing fowls in Osun State.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi praised the swift intervention of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, who stepped in to address the court's harsh ruling.
The case centers on Segun Olowookere and Morakinyo Sunday, who were sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly stealing fowls. The ruling sparked public outrage, with many condemning the disproportionate punishment for such a minor offense. In response to the widespread outcry, Governor Adeleke intervened, ensuring a review of the sentence.
Peter Obi condemned the sentence as "inhumane" and "excessively harsh," arguing that the punishment far exceeded the crime. He highlighted how the case reflected deeper flaws and inconsistencies within Nigeria's legal system. Obi also criticized the judicial system for its biased approach, noting the stark contrast in how ordinary citizens are treated for petty crimes compared to those involved in large-scale corruption.
In his statement, Obi pointed out the inequalities of Nigeria's legal system, emphasizing how public officials accused of embezzling billions often face little to no consequences. Meanwhile, ordinary Nigerians struggling to make a living face oppressive laws and harsh judgments. Obi concluded by highlighting the hypocrisy in a system where honest success is treated with suspicion while those in power evade justice.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the systemic issues within Nigeria's legal framework, underscoring the urgent need for reform and fairness in the justice system.
