The federal government has suspended the relocation of the Osun State International Airport project from Ido-Osun to Ede, following widespread protests and backlash over the controversial decision.

Governor Ademola Adeleke had planned a foundation-laying ceremony for the new airport in Ede, his hometown, on December 16, 2024, with dignitaries such as Ministers of Works and Aviation, David Umahi and Festus Keyamo, expected to attend.

However, the relocation proposal faced fierce criticism. The Ido-Osun community staged protests, labeling the move as nepotistic and undemocratic. Opponents accused the state government of prioritizing personal interests over the public good.

In response, the Osun State government cited several reasons for the proposed relocation, including land encroachment at the Ido-Osun site, the presence of gullies, and an inadequate runway.

The controversy reached a turning point when the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace directed Governor Adeleke to suspend the project indefinitely. A letter dated December 6, 2024, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Emmanuel D. Meribole, highlighted the need to resolve petitions regarding the existing airstrip and to align state efforts with federal plans.

The letter emphasized that the Ido-Osun airstrip is already a federal project captured in the 2024 appropriation, with significant funds expended. It urged collaboration to prevent resource wastage, stating:

“The federal government is mandated to ensure judicious use of funds. As this Airstrip Project is a collaboration between state and federal governments, we must be in synch before the project takes off.”

This suspension marks a major setback for Governor Adeleke’s administration, as some people are now more concerned about the "Edenilization"of Osun State.
