Manchester United are said to have 'agreed' that handing defender Eric Bailly a three-year contract was a 'mistake'.

In April, Bailly signed a contract extension with the club in the hopes of remaining injury-free and realizing his objective of winning the Premier League title with the club.

However, the Ivory Coast international has had a difficult season, making only six starts so far this season.

At Old Trafford, Bailly has been behind Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order.

Man United, according to the Manchester Evening News, has privately recognized that offering the 28-year-old a contract extension was a mistake.

The report added that the deal took place because of the club’s former executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward’s strategy of “tying down peripheral players to new deals to increase their resale value."

Meanwhile, Bailly has grown disillusioned with life at Old Trafford because of his lack of opportunities and has been frustrated that out-of-form captain, Harry Maguire, has kept his place in the starting line-up ahead of him.

Those frustrations became public when he made a plea to start ahead of Maguire during their Premier League 3-1 defeat to Arsenal last month.

Replying to a fan who said he wanted Bailly and Varane to start for Man United against Arsenal, Bailly commented "please" with a laughing and a praying emoji on Instagram.

When asked about Bailly's post, Rangnick said during his pre-match news conference before Arsenal's match against Manchester United that the former Villarreal defender should not have written it.

"If what you told me is accurate, it's not the correct sign and should not happen on a football team, no matter what league," Rangnick stated.
I don't use Instagram. Listen, I'm not talking about my guys not knowing what happened during the press conference; it makes no sense. I can only say that I will never use Instagram in my life. "
