Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has expressed confidence in the ability of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) players to compete with their Europe-based counterparts, particularly in defence and midfield roles.
During a recent media tour, the former Enyimba coach emphasized that local talent would have the opportunity to earn spots in the national team.
"We have a lot of good strikers who are doing well in Europe, week in, week out. So, I believe players from the league can hold their own in midfield and defence," George stated.
Currently, the only NPFL player in the squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire is Olorunleke Ojo. However, George's latest comments suggest a potential shift towards greater inclusion of homegrown talent.
The 53-year-old coach is expected to announce his roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic by the end of this week. The Super Eagles are set to face these challenging matches next month.
