The National Universities Commission (NUC) has raised a red flag on the existence of at least 58 illegal universities or satellite campuses within Nigeria.
In a recent announcement, Acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki emphasized that certificates obtained from these institutions would not be acknowledged for mandatory one-year national service, employment, or further educational pursuits.
Maiyaki, speaking to Channels Television in Abuja on Wednesday, revealed that arrests had been made in connection with the operators of these sham institutions. He highlighted the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS) in cracking down on these illegal entities and their promoters.
To safeguard prospective students and their families, Maiyaki urged parents and guardians to consult the commission's website, where a comprehensive list of legal and illegal universities in Nigeria is available. This precautionary step aims to prevent unsuspecting individuals from falling prey to the deceptive practices of these unauthorized institutions.
This revelation comes in the wake of the suspension of degree certificates from two Francophone West African countries and others. An undercover journalist's expose detailed the acquisition of a degree from a university in Benin Republic in under two months, leading to deployment for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
In a public announcement, Maiyaki listed the fake institutions slated for closure, along with nine others described as "Degree Mills" undergoing further investigation or legal actions. The NUC's decisive actions are geared towards prosecuting proprietors and recovering illegal fees and charges from subscribers.
The institutions facing closure or investigation include the National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State; North Central University, Otukpo, Benue State; Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu; Richmond Open University, Arochukwu, Abia State; West Coast University, Umuahia; Saint Clements University, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State; Volta University College, Aba, Abia State; Illegal Satellite Campuses of Ambrose Alli University, and L.I.F.E Leadership University, Benin City, Edo State.
Maiyaki issued a stern warning, emphasizing that individuals obtaining certificates from these illegal institutions do so at their own risk, as such credentials will not be recognized for NYSC, employment, or further educational pursuits.
