According to Sony Music Publishing Nigeria's managing director, Godwin Tom, both Wizkid and Wande Coal have taken out bank loans at some point to support their musical careers.
In an interview with 3Music TV in Accra, Ghana, he revealed this.
According to him, Nigerian artists made an investment in themselves to get to where they are now.
Tom said, “Nigerian artists put their own money into achieving stardom. I will give you an example. I know, for example, that Wiz [the kid] took a loan at some point in his career. He believed himself and bet on himself. Wande Coal did the same thing.
“If a Nigerian artist hears that his song is number one in Accra, he is showing up the next day. He is going to borrow money if he has to. He’s going to do radio interviews. He’s going to find who he needs to talk to. He’s going to come in and find out how he can capitalize on that attention. He would make some club appearances. He would make some money. He could enter this country with $100 and leave with $20,000.”
