According to the Kaduna State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), bandits have killed about 10 teachers and kidnapped about 50 others in the state.

Ishaya Dauda, the Chairman of the ASUSS Kaduna State Chapter, who made the revelation, advised Governor Nasir El-Rufai to use every legal option at his disposal to secure the release of all teachers and other victims who are still being held captive in various camps throughout the State.

In Kaduna on Wednesday, he lamented that "more than 10 secondary school teachers were killed and more than 50 others abducted from January to date in Kaduna and the abducted teachers are still in captivity" as part of events to commemorate the 2022 World Teachers' Day with the theme "The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers."

According to him, the union is fully aware of the insecurity that is threatening the corporate existence of Kaduna State citizens, especially in the schools, urging the state government to take proactive actions towards bringing the menace to an end.

The union stated that it is equally aware of efforts being made by the state government towards the recruitment of Kaduna State vigilante service to secure the schools against the incessant attacks by terrorists.

He hailed the efforts of Governor El-Rufa’i in the prompt payment of teachers’ salaries and enjoined the governor to ensure prompt payment of retirees’ benefits to ease the hardship of those that have retired from service.

He appealed to Governor El-Rufai to facilitate the promotion of their members, which had been delayed since 2020, saying that ASUSS, like any other trade union, has enjoyed the goodwill of the Kaduna State Government.

He added that ASUSS was working in partnership with the office of the Head of Service, the Kaduna State Ministry of Education, the Kaduna Teachers’ Service Commission and other relevant stakeholders towards ensuring better welfare for its members in terms of recruitment, promotion and other welfare packages.
