A tragic incident has shaken the community of Obanliku Local Government Area in Cross River State, as two youths lost their lives when a deep well they were digging for mining activities collapsed on them.

The heartbreaking event unfolded at Shikpeshe, along Buya Road, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

According to reports, the two youths tragically suffocated inside the collapsed mining well, while three others sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Locals revealed that the incident occurred during an attempt to exploit a rare mineral, Tourmaline, discovered in the area by illegal miners. These miners purportedly enlisted the help of youths from the community to aid in the extraction process.

It was reported that the youths had been tirelessly digging the well for approximately four months, reaching a depth that was deemed precarious and hazardous.

In response to the devastating accident, Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the community.

The tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining activities and the importance of prioritizing safety measures in such endeavors. As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, efforts must be intensified to prevent similar tragedies and ensure the well-being of individuals engaged in mining activities across the region.
