Former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the United States presidential election and begged him to help handle the 2027 election in Nigeria for free and fair sake.

Representing the Republican Party, Trump defeated Vice-President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, to become the 47th president of the United States.

World leaders, including President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, have extended their congratulations to the president-elect.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Abubakar commended Trump’s political journey, highlighting it as a testament to the resilience of democracy. “The narrative of President Trump's political journey, marked by his struggles and triumphs, shall serve as an inspiring parable of courage in the face of adversity — a lesson in the art of rising after every fall, and ultimately, emerging victorious,” Abubakar noted.

He hoped that Trump’s leadership would continue supporting credible elections and opposing anti-democratic forces globally. “As the world rejoices in the euphoria of his remarkable comeback, it is to be hoped that President Trump will continue his resolute advocacy for credible elections worldwide and remain steadfast in dismantling anti-democratic forces wherever they may lurk,” he added.

Abubakar also emphasized the importance of the integrity displayed in the U.S. electoral process, urging Trump to promote fair elections in Nigeria and beyond. “The lesson for us in Nigeria is the integrity of the process that ensures a credible outcome. Every Nigerian expects that the Trump administration will stand resolute in ensuring free and fair elections in Nigeria and other places in the world,” he said.

As a former candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abubakar has made clear his intention to continue seeking the presidency as long as he remains healthy. Now 77, he will be 81 when the next presidential election arrives in 2027.
