The Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation has renewed calls for urgent international diplomatic intervention to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, who has now endured 2,557 days in captivity since her abduction by Boko Haram on February 19, 2018.
Leah was among 110 schoolgirls kidnapped from Dapchi, Yobe State, but while the others were later freed, she remains in captivity—a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis.
Government Silence Sparks Outrage
Speaking in Jalingo, Taraba State, during an anniversary event marking Leah’s abduction, the foundation’s Executive Director, Gideon Para-Mallam, expressed deep disappointment over the lack of action from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
He urged the government to build on past efforts and push harder for Leah’s release, calling on First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to intervene.
"As a mother, she should use every legitimate means to bring Leah home to her parents," he emphasized.
A Cry for Mercy and Justice
Para-Mallam also made a heartfelt plea to Leah’s captors, urging them to show compassion and release her after seven years of suffering.
"It is heartbreaking that Leah is still in captivity while all the other kidnapped Dapchi schoolgirls have been freed," he lamented.
Leah Sharibu and Malala: A Global Call for Action
Drawing parallels with Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Para-Mallam called for a unified global response, transcending religious and ethnic divides, to secure Leah’s freedom.
"As the world rallied behind Malala, we must stand up for Leah and ensure she regains her freedom," he urged.
He also commended individuals, organizations, and advocacy groups working tirelessly to amplify Leah’s story and fight for her release.
Time to Act: Pressure Must Mount on Authorities
With seven years gone, Leah’s case remains a tragic symbol of unresolved injustices. The call for action is loud and clear—Nigeria’s government, international leaders, and human rights organizations must do more to bring Leah home.
Leah Sharibu deserves freedom. The world must not stay silent.
