The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Oyo State has sanctioned a branch of the Christ Apostolic Church following violent attacks on a Muslim family in Iseyin.

Apostle Sunday Ogundairo, CAN chairman in Iseyin Local Government Area, spoke to Daily Trust on Sunday, revealing efforts to mend relations with the Muslim community in the town.

"I have gone around pleading with the Islamic scholars in Iseyinland. They should please soft-pedal their annoyance. It is glaring that the man (pastor) was guilty. CAN in Iseyin has also sanctioned the pastor and ordered him to look for another place to locate his church," Ogundairo stated.

The incident, which escalated from ongoing tensions that began last year, involved a violent confrontation on Eid day. A widely circulated video implicated the pastor and some members of the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Imuse, Iseyin, in the attack on Mr. Sulaimon AbdulAzeez and his two wives, who were in purdah.

According to AbdulAzeez, the pastor hired soldiers to attack them over an alleged dispute about slaughtering a ram facing the church. His heavily pregnant wife was severely beaten and dragged to the church premises, while his other wife's head was smashed.

The attacks have been condemned by the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC), CAN, and other religious groups. Prof. Isiaq Akintola, MURIC’s Executive Director, highlighted a long-standing misunderstanding between the Muslim family and the church over noise pollution, which had previously required the intervention of the king of Iseyin.
