A devastating tanker explosion in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, has claimed the lives of a petroleum tanker driver and his apprentice.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 4, 2025, beside Total Filling Station at Orita Challenge. According to reports, the tanker, which was transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, suffered a brake failure while attempting to navigate a roundabout. This led to a fatal crash, causing the tanker to hit a concrete barrier, somersault, and burst into flames.
Confirming the incident, Oyo State Fire Service General Manager, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, stated that emergency responders were alerted at exactly 5:01 AM. A firefighting team, led by ACFS Olubunmi Christy, was immediately dispatched to the scene.
"Upon arrival, we found a fallen petrol tanker ablaze right in front of a petrol station. Our team quickly sprang into action, applying foam chemical compounds to contain the fire," Akinyinka said. "Unfortunately, the driver and his motor boy were burnt beyond recognition. Their remains have been recovered and handed over to the FRSC for transport to the hospital."
Firefighters from Sumal Food Limited also joined the operation, assisting in extinguishing the fire and preventing further escalation. Emergency personnel remained on-site for cooling operations to ensure complete fire suppression.
The explosion, caused by brake failure, serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with fuel transportation. Authorities continue to assess the scene while urging drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance to prevent such disasters.
