The Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disability and the Edo State Civil Society Organisations (EDOSCO) staged a powerful protest in Benin City on Tuesday, condemning the brutal murder of a physically challenged man, Efe Ogbeide, in the Obazagbon community, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to DAILY POST, the protesters expressed outrage over the gruesome killing, calling for swift justice. Barrister Omasah Melody, Executive Director of the Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disability, revealed that Ogbeide, who was deaf, tragically fell victim because he couldn’t hear the alarm raised during the violent invasion of the community.

“While others managed to escape, he unknowingly walked into the hands of his killers,” Melody lamented.

Call for Justice

Demanding urgent action from authorities, Melody urged the government to ensure the culprits face the full wrath of the law.

“We are heartbroken. Mrs. Betty has lost a beloved husband, and his children have been left fatherless. His only ‘crime’ was his determination to provide for his family despite his disability. He refused to be a burden to society, yet he met a tragic end,” Melody stated.

He further raised concerns over the rising communal clashes over land disputes, emphasizing that persons with disabilities suffer the most in times of crisis.

“The security agencies must step up. This endless violence must stop. Physically challenged individuals are the most vulnerable in such situations,” he added.

Police Response

Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, disclosed that three suspects have already been arrested in connection with the deadly attack, and investigations are ongoing.

Reports indicate that the Obazagbon community has been embroiled in a violent leadership tussle, leading to widespread destruction of property and loss of lives.

Justice Must Prevail

As civil society groups continue to push for justice, the call for an end to community violence grows louder. Will the authorities rise to the challenge and ensure justice for Efe Ogbeide and his grieving family?

Stay tuned for more updates.
