Yesterday (Thursday), the Kano State Fire Service successfully rescued a 37-year-old man who was on the verge of taking his own life by hanging.
The individual, identified as Saifullah Rabiu, revealed in a suicide note that he found himself in dire straits due to a debt amounting to N2 million, owed for a foreign visa payment.
The confirmation of this dramatic rescue was provided by the State Fire Service spokesman, Saminu Abdullahi, through an official statement released to the press.
According to the statement, the emergency call reporting the incident was received at the Central Control Room around 10:07 am from the Ministry of Works and Housing, Kano State. The distressing incident occurred at the State Road by Nassarawa Emir’s house.
Responding promptly to the call, the fire service personnel on standby duty swiftly mobilized to the scene and reached it by 10:10 am. Upon arrival, they successfully rescued Saifullahi Rabiu, a resident of Semegu Quarters, who was in the process of attempting suicide by hanging from a tree.
The statement further revealed the distressing circumstances surrounding the man's desperate act. Saifullahi Rabiu, in his suicide note, explained that he owed a substantial sum of N2 million for a foreign entry visa. Despite repaying about N500,000 of the debt, he decided to take such drastic measures due to the challenges and embarrassment inflicted upon him by the creditor.
In a positive turn of events, the rescued man has been handed over to D.C.O Zaharaddini of the Farm Centre Police Division for further investigations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for a supportive community to prevent such tragic occurrences.
