The Federal Government has announced the commencement of construction on sections three and four of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, with work starting immediately from Calabar.

This significant update was revealed by the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, during a meeting with community representatives along the road's alignment from Eko Atlantic to Eleko in Lagos.

Sen. Umahi outlined that section three would begin in Calabar, while section four would start in Akwa Ibom. He emphasized, “Mr. President has directed that section three, starting from Calabar, and section four, from Akwa Ibom, should commence immediately. We are in the process of concluding the procurement.”

Addressing questions about the decision to start these sections from Calabar, Umahi explained, “The zero point is Lagos. What wrong has Lagos done to these people? However, our impartial President, Sen. Bola Tinubu, has directed that sections three and four be started from the end of the project. So, while one part is progressing, the other will too. I’m sure that sections five and six will also commence soon in locations like Port Harcourt and Bayelsa.”

In addition to this, the Minister announced the President's approval for the construction of a road connecting Sokoto to Badagry. He stated, “At the last Federal Executive Committee meeting, Mr. President also approved another project: the design and procurement of the Sokoto to Badagry road. This 1,000 km route will pass through significant regions, including areas with irrigation, lands, and dams for potential power generation, connecting Sokoto to Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and finally Badagry in Lagos State.”

Acknowledging the project's ambitious nature and the potential criticism of its scale and selected sections, Umahi noted that section one spans 47.7 kilometers and represents a significant undertaking for an interstate road project.
