The Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojeed Fatai, has officially resigned from his position, effective today, Monday, March 3, 2025.
Fatai made the announcement during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Mojisola Meranda, stating:
“I hereby tender my resignation as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective today, March 3, 2025.”
Notably absent from the session was Mudashiru Obasa, the recently ousted Speaker.
Behind-the-Scenes Tension
Fatai’s resignation follows a closed-door meeting between Speaker Meranda, Obasa, and other lawmakers. While the exact details of the discussion remain undisclosed, the lawmakers returned to the chambers afterward to continue plenary proceedings.
Political Turmoil in the Lagos Assembly
This latest development is part of the ongoing political drama that erupted in January, when Obasa was impeached over allegations of misappropriation. His deputy, Meranda, was swiftly sworn in as the new Speaker, marking a major shift in the Assembly’s leadership.
With Fatai’s sudden resignation, speculation is rife over the next move in this unfolding power struggle within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
