In a significant move to combat smuggling and address the impact on rising commodity prices, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted 15 trucks carrying food items in Sokoto State.

The operation, revealed by Abubakar Chafe, the spokesperson for the NCS Sokoto Command, unfolded on Saturday, February 17, 2024, along the Gwadabawa-Illela road.

The decision to halt these vehicles was prompted by the substantial quantities of agricultural produce they were transporting, raising concerns about potential smuggling activities. The seized trucks are currently under the control of the NCS Sokoto Command as investigations are in progress to ascertain the ownership and intended destinations of the confiscated food items.

This joint effort involved the NCS Sokoto command, the federal operation unit, and the intelligence unit of the service, showcasing the comprehensive strategy employed by the NCS to tackle the issue at hand. The operation highlights the service's dedication to alleviating inflationary pressures on food items in Nigeria by preventing smuggling activities that contribute to the escalating costs of essential commodities.
