Reports from Khaosod English have revealed a startling incident at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, where a Nigerian man was apprehended after ingesting 69 packets of drugs.
The unnamed individual, arriving from Doha, Qatar, caught the attention of Customs officers and the Airport Interdiction Task Force due to suspicious behavior.
During a meticulous examination, the man was found to have concealed 69 small parcels of drugs within his body, totaling nearly 1.4 kilograms. The estimated value of the seized narcotics amounted to over 4 million baht.
The exact method of discovery remains unclear, as it is uncertain whether the suspect underwent X-ray examination or if Customs officials patiently awaited the drugs to pass through his system naturally.
Subsequent to his apprehension, the individual was transferred to the custody of Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The Director General of Customs, Thirach Attanawanich, emphasized the heightened vigilance of officers in combating drug trafficking, aligning with the government's stringent anti-drug policies. He revealed that between October 1, 2023, and March 25, 2024, Customs authorities conducted 74 successful drug seizures, valued at over 412 million baht.
This significant increase in apprehensions contrasts with the previous year's figures, which recorded 185 arrests and drug seizures totaling 1.17 billion baht between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023. The statistics underscore the ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trade and uphold security measures at Thailand's international airports.
