Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, former Chairman of the Special Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property under President Muhammadu Buhari, has weighed in on recent comments made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Obasanjo had suggested that certain individuals in government should be imprisoned, a statement that has sparked considerable debate.
Obono-Obla, reflecting on his extensive legal experience, has expressed caution regarding such sweeping claims. He argues that while it might be tempting to believe that many from Obasanjo's eight-year presidency should be behind bars, it is essential to adhere to legal principles that require evidence and due process.
"As a seasoned lawyer, I cannot support arguments based merely on allegations," Obono-Obla stated. "No matter how enticing it might sound, suspicion alone does not equate to guilt. This is a fundamental principle of law."
Obono-Obla stresses that accusations must be substantiated through proper investigation and judicial processes. He questions whether the allegations against these individuals have been thoroughly investigated, if a prima facie case has been established, and if they have been convicted by a competent court.
In his view, suggesting that someone should be in jail without clear evidence and due judicial procedure is speculative and ungrounded.
