The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Mahmood Yakubu has said yesterday at the Inec's consultative meeting with political parties that the commission will use the forthcoming election in Osun state as a laboratory to curb the act of  vote buying in the 2019 general election.

The INEC boss promised to do all possible things to suppress the trending act of vote buying  because the commission has been working with security agencies to curb the act in the September 22 election in Osun state.

He said " We are looking forward to the Osun state governorship election to make a very definite statement on vote buying. Right now, we are working with security agencies to arrest and also prosecute and also make public show of how not to behave in a democracy ".

Yakubu also warn  the people of Osun state  not to say that they are ignorant of this, he said " So when the time comes, do not say you were not forewarned ".

The INEC chairman stated it unequivocally that "We can’t carry this menace into the 2019 general elections and Osun is going to be the laboratory for us to test all the processes that we intend to introduce to address this menace of vote buying.

“We are witnessing a trend in most recent elections, and that is the menace of vote buying. And to be very frank, the vote buyers are your own candidates and actors because these are the people looking for votes.”

These vote buyers, Mr Mahmood said “are giving the nation’s democracy a very bad name and this cannot be condoned.

It will be recalled that the Osun gubernatorial election will hold in two weeks time, an election that is being participated by 48 political parties but with 4 leading contestants which are Omisore of SDP, Oyetola of APC, Adeleke of PDP and Adeoti of ADP.
