The Edo State Government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has received a damning report from an Administrative Panel of Inquiry, revealing a massive financial scandal involving the mismanagement and diversion of N95,080,676,687.
86 in local government funds.
The panel, led by Solomon Imohiosen, has allegedly indicted former Governor Godwin Obaseki, top PDP leaders, and several local government chairmen.
Key Findings from the Inquiry Panel
According to the report, the 18 Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen received funds from the Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC) between September 4, 2023, and November 2024. However, the panel found no meaningful projects to justify the expenditures.
How the Funds Were Allegedly Diverted
- Over N10.4 billion was funneled into a fraudulent scheme under the guise of “Security, Environment, and Training.”
- The former ALGON chairman, Oghomwen Newman Ugiagbe, allegedly used his hotel, Demarriots Hotels Limited, to siphon local government funds.
- Other officials implicated include Ahonsi Ogiegbaen Osifo, Eric Agbonmwanre, Abraham Burma, and Dickson Imasogie Notiemwenmwan.
- Large sums were allegedly transferred to private accounts and political godfathers, with significant irregularities uncovered in the financial records of all 18 LGAs.
Challenges Faced by the Panel
The investigation was hindered by late and incomplete submission of financial records, deliberate obstruction by council personnel, and attempts to overwhelm the panel with excessive, irrelevant documents.
Governor Okpebholo’s Vow for Justice
After receiving the report, Governor Okpebholo assured the people of Edo State that those responsible would be held accountable. He declared his intention to personally submit the report to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for immediate prosecution.
“The administration of former governor Godwin Obaseki took Edo people for granted, looted public funds, and left the state in ruins. This time, things are different. We will retrieve what was stolen and ensure justice is served.” – Governor Okpebholo.
Political and Public Reactions
The report has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift legal action. Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the era of financial recklessness in public office is over, urging Nigerians to demand transparency and accountability from their leaders.
Next Steps: EFCC Prosecution Looms
With the Edo State Government set to hand over the report to the EFCC, the fate of the indicted individuals, including former Governor Obaseki and PDP leaders, now hangs in the balance.
This development marks a turning point in Edo State’s fight against corruption, promising a future where public funds are managed with integrity and accountability.
