In a dramatic turn of events, the deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has secured victory in the parallel People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries held in the state.
The deputy governor clinched the win with an impressive count of over three hundred and one votes.
While Philip Shaibu celebrates his triumph, the faction led by Governor Godwin Obaseki is yet to kick off its own primary election, adding an element of suspense to the unfolding political landscape in Edo State.
Among the contenders cleared for the governorship primary, notable names include Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, Anselem Ojezua, Felix Akhabue, Dr Asue Ighodalo, Arthur Esene, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Amb. Martin Uhumoibi, Osaro Onaiwu, Umoru Hadizat, and the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
A total of 576 delegates are expected to play a crucial role in deciding the fate of these aspirants at the primaries, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. The electoral committee overseeing the exercise is chaired by Zamfara State Governor, Lawal, Dauda Lawal, with Governor Sheriff Oborevwhori of Delta serving as co-chairman. The committee comprises Senator James Manager (secretary), Senator Bayero Nafada, Mrs Nella Rabana, SAN, Hadiza Mustapha, and Chief Felix Hyatt.
In a statement released by the party’s State Organising Secretary, Tony Anenih Jr., the detailed processes of the exercise were outlined. This included information on delegate gathering, accreditation procedures, and the overall conduct of the primary.
As the political landscape in Edo State remains charged with anticipation, the primaries are shaping up to be a closely watched two-horse race, primarily between Dr. Asue Ighodalo and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama. Despite high-wire intrigues and weeks of consultations, Dr. Ighodalo, the candidate backed by Governor Godwin Obaseki, is poised to emerge as the PDP’s governorship candidate.
Amidst this political drama, there are indications that protesting aspirants may make their presence felt at the venue, contrary to earlier speculations of a parallel congress. The unfolding developments add layers of intrigue to the already dynamic political landscape in Edo State.
