In Kubwa, Abuja, a police operative on patrol allegedly shot and killed Onyebuchi Anele, a father of one, with a teargas canister.
The incident occurred near Haj Estate, where the deceased resided with his young wife and daughter.
The incident began with a minor accident involving Anele and a motorcyclist. After ensuring the motorcyclist and his passenger were unharmed, Anele headed towards his home in Haj Estate. However, police officers arrived at the scene and insisted that Anele accompany them to the station, despite the motorcyclist and his passenger having already left.
An altercation ensued, escalating to the point where one of the policemen shot a teargas canister into Anele’s eye at close range. The grievously injured Anele was rushed by his church members and neighbors to Kubwa General Hospital. He was then referred to the National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 8 AM on Thursday.
Friends of Anele, who stayed by his side until his death, described the devastating impact on his wife. One friend, Ndubuisi Nwaneri, recounted, "She began acting erratically, sitting one moment and then suddenly running. We had to deceive her that her husband was still alive, even though his body had been moved to the mortuary."
