The Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadier Suleiman Kazaure has apprised the intention of the Federal Government to drastically make an upward review of the monthly allowance being given to the corps members.
It should be noted that, the amount receive per corps member every month from the government is N19, 800, and with the present socioeconomic state of the country, the allowance is quite below the cost of living in the country. The Director General (DG) made this know to the public on Thursday 2nd of August 2018, during his courtesy visitation to the NYSC camp in Abuja, noting that the NYSC, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has received a letter from the Presidency, which confirmed that the process to review the allowance of corps members had begun. The DG also buttressed his claim by saying the Presidency had also sent a copy of the letter to the Ministry of Finance for further consideration. The DG beseeched the corp's members to be a good ambassador of the country. In his statement, the DG said The Federal Government is working to increase your monthly allowance. Therefore, wherever you find yourselves, conduct yourself well and be good ambassadors for the country. We received a letter from the Presidency through the Ministry of Youth and Sports and copied to the Ministry of Finance, which shows that the corps members allowance will be reviewed upward. This is in the pipeline. It can be recalled that some days ago, the DG had earlier visited the Edo State NYSC camp where he addressed the 1,989 corps members deployed to the state for 2018 Batch B and urged the corps members that will be participating in the 2019 general elections as ad hoc staffs to shun electoral malpractices, and he warned that, any corps member who violated the electoral laws would be dealt with accordingly. It should be noted that the NYSC 2018 Batch B corps members are presently undergoing the 3 weeks compulsory orientation course in their respective camps across the country.
