The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Martins Amaewhule, has successfully passed the Rivers State Local Government Bill into Law, despite Governor Siminalayi Fubara's veto.
Initially sent to Governor Fubara for approval on March 13, 2024, the Local Government Bill was denied. However, it was reintroduced by Major Jack, representing Akuku/Toru constituency 1, and thoroughly debated by Assembly members.
Additionally, the Amaewhule-led lawmakers conducted screening and confirmation of nominees for chairman and members of the Assembly Service Commission. Notable among the confirmed nominees are Sampson Worlu as chairman, and Abinye Blessing Pepple, Blessing Belema Derefaka, Gbaranen Robinson, and Madam Dorcas Amos as members.
Furthermore, the Amaewhule-led Assembly is pushing for timely local government elections before Governor Fubara's tenure expires, although the governor has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
