On Thursday, the Senate passed a bill establishing the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

This landmark legislation, championed by Senator Abba Patrick Moro of Benue South and other North Central senators, aims to drive significant development in the region.

News360 Nigeria reports that the bill, which underwent its first and second readings on October 5, 2023, and February 21, 2024, respectively, was initially introduced by Senator Moro during the 9th Senate. Although it cleared initial readings then, it failed to receive presidential assent before the Senate's term ended.

In his lead debate, Senator Moro emphasized that the NCDC will manage funds from both the federal government and donors to support the resettlement, rehabilitation, integration, and reconstruction of roads, houses, and businesses affected by floods. Additionally, the commission will address farmers-herders clashes, communal conflicts, and environmental challenges. Plans include constructing large drainage systems and dredging the Niger and Benue rivers to control flooding. The commission also aims to combat poverty, illiteracy, and other developmental issues plaguing North Central Nigeria.

The bill's passage followed the Senate Committee on Special Duties' report adoption during the plenary session. Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, congratulated Senator Moro and all contributors to the bill's success. He expressed optimism that President Tinubu would sign the bill, enhancing development across North Central Nigeria, which includes Kogi, Niger, Benue, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
