The immediate past Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has officially resigned from her position, emphasizing her commitment to preserving the integrity of the legislative institution.

Meranda, who assumed office on January 13, 2025, announced her resignation on March 3, 2025, citing leadership disputes that threatened the stability and unity of the House. She reaffirmed her dedication to serving the people of Apapa Constituency 1 and Lagos State at large.

Full Speech by Mojisola Meranda

“Today, I stand before you with a deep sense of responsibility and personal sacrifice, as I announce my resignation from the position of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
I recognize the invaluable role my family has played and continues to play in strengthening democracy, ensuring good governance, and improving the lives of our people. I remain steadfast in upholding the values of honor, dignity, integrity, and service—principles embodied by my late father.
As I expressed in a recent public statement, my decision to step down was not taken lightly. It is with great thought and consideration that I officially resign from the Speakership, effective March 3, 2025. Though I embraced this role with optimism on January 13, 2025, the escalating leadership crisis posed a significant threat to the democratic foundation of this House.
Our primary responsibility as legislators is to safeguard the interests of the good people of Lagos State and to uphold effective governance. In light of recent challenges, I believe my resignation is a necessary act of leadership and selflessness—one aimed at protecting the hard-earned credibility and stability of this esteemed institution.
I deeply appreciate the unwavering support and solidarity I have received from my esteemed colleagues, the management, and the dedicated staff of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Your cooperation has been invaluable, and I cherish the relationships we have built.
Though my tenure as Speaker was brief, it remains a significant and memorable chapter in my public service journey. I step down not as a quitter but as a leader making a bold decision to safeguard the future of this legislative institution.
To my distinguished colleagues of the 10th Assembly, we will always face trials and conflicts. However, as responsible leaders, we must prioritize justice and fairness while preserving the institution we have collectively nurtured. For those who have been unjustly criticized for standing for fairness, be assured that justice will always prevail in the end.
I am sincerely grateful for the overwhelming support I have received through calls, messages, and visits during this period. Your encouragement has strengthened my resolve to continue serving my constituents in Apapa Constituency 1 and Lagos State as a whole.
As I take a bow and step down from this esteemed position, I do so with gratitude and a firm commitment to the service of my people.
God bless you all.”
