Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman has addressed the controversy surrounding his missed penalty in their 3-1 Champions League defeat to Club Brugge on Tuesday night.
Lookman, who started the match on the bench, made an immediate impact after coming on, scoring just after the restart to give his team hope. However, despite his efforts, Atalanta struggled to overturn Brugge’s three-goal first-half advantage, with the Belgian side having already won the first leg 2-1 at home.
The Nigerian forward had a golden opportunity to score a second goal for his team but saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Simon Mignolet.
After the match, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini made headlines by claiming that Lookman was “the worst penalty taker he has ever seen.”
In response to the backlash and heated debates that followed, Lookman took to social media to clarify that he had been instructed by the team’s designated penalty taker to step up for the spot-kick.
His statement has sparked further discussions, adding another layer to Atalanta’s disappointing Champions League exit.
