Javier Tebas, President of La Liga, recently stated that the departures of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively didn't negatively impact the Spanish league.
Tebas emphasized that despite being global superstars, their absence didn't alter the competitive landscape. He highlighted that even in their new leagues, Serie A and Ligue 1, their presence didn't significantly benefit those leagues.
“[Messi and Ronaldo leaving] didn’t cause any damage because we didn’t shrink, but with them, we would certainly have grown faster.
“The French league with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe didn’t grow, Cristiano Ronaldo went to Italy and Italian football [revenue] has not improved, ours did even though we lost them both,” Tebas said.
