Nick Pope, the goalkeeper for Newcastle United, has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United for the Portuguese player's controversial goal for the Red Devils during their Sunday Premier League match.

The England goalie insisted that the call by referee Craig Pawson to reverse Ronaldo's goal was the right one.

In the second half, Fabian Schar touched the ball back to the goalkeeper to take a free kick, leading Ronaldo and his United teammates to believe they had broken the scoreless tie.

Ronaldo snuck in, dribbled the ball a few yards, and then finished into an open net as Pope remained still and appeared to be waiting for the referee's instructions.

Despite loud objections from the Red Devils, referee Pawson immediately called back the ball and disallowed Ronaldo's effort.

“The free-kick was slightly in the wrong place and obviously Fabby’s [Schar] rolled it back to me and walked off,’’ Pope told Chronicle Live.

“I think you know by everyone’s body language that you know he’s not meaning to take a free-kick.

“I think the referee sorted it out quickly and fair play to him for making the right decision and squashing it straight away.”

The match, however, ended goalless at Old Trafford as both teams could not find the back of the net.
