Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on midfielder Nico Gonzalez, describing him as a “mini-Rodri” after an outstanding Premier League debut against Newcastle United.
City cruised to a dominant 4-0 victory over Newcastle over the weekend, with Omar Marmoush stealing the headlines with a sensational hat-trick. However, it was Gonzalez’s performance in midfield that caught Guardiola’s eye.
The Spanish coach believes the 23-year-old could be the long-awaited replacement for Rodri, who is currently sidelined with an ACL injury.
Guardiola’s High Praise for Gonzalez
Speaking after the match, Guardiola expressed his admiration for the young midfielder, emphasizing his ability to win duels and control the game.
“I think Nico’s presence helped us a lot. Out of 10 challenges, he wins seven, and that allows the team to push forward,” Guardiola said.
“When you lose those duels, the opponent counterattacks. But with Nico, you feel the security. The club has signed an incredible player for the future—his mentality is outstanding.”
A Bright Future at Manchester City
Gonzalez, who arrived from Porto for £50 million on transfer deadline day, made an instant impact, forming a solid partnership in midfield alongside Ilkay Gundogan.
Although Guardiola acknowledges that Gonzalez is still far from reaching Rodri’s elite level, he is confident that the young Spaniard will be a key player in City’s title push this season.
“He’s only 23, remember that,” Guardiola added. “He reminds me of Rodri—a big presence, strong in duels. Of course, he’s miles away from Rodri right now because Rodri is the best. But we all have the feeling that he’s going to be a huge help for us in the final stretch of the season.”
Gonzalez’s Role in City’s Title Race
With Manchester City aiming for another Premier League title, Gonzalez’s emergence could be a game-changer in Rodri’s absence. His ability to control the midfield and win battles will be crucial as City enters a decisive phase of the season.
As Guardiola put it, “When we play like we did today, everyone looks better—even the manager!”
